Betta sp. 'Antuta- Bulungan' Full Mask

Size 10-12cm

Order: Perciformes

Family: Osphronemidae

Distribution: The species Betta sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' is found in the 'Bulungan Jungle' in Bulungan Regency, East Kalimantan Province, North Borneo, Indonesia. These fish inhabit fast-flowing mountain streams rather than swamps or other low-lying bodies of water.

Size of the aquarium: For a couple of Betta sp. 'Antuta' an aquarium with a surface area of 80 × 30 cm is recommended. However, if you wish to maintain a group, larger spaces will be required. Use afilter with a water flow between 4 and 5 times the volume of your aquarium.

Maintenance: These fish can be kept in a fully decorated aquarium. You can use driftwood roots and branches to create shaded areas. Clay pots or pipes can also serve as shelters.

It is important to note that cattapa leaves can release tannins, which could have a negative effect on this clear water species.

These fish prefer subdued light. You may consider adding plants that can survive such conditions such as Java Fern - Microsorum pteropus , Aquatic Mosses or Cryptocoryne . Floating plants to dim the light would also be beneficial.

Unlike most conspecifics, this species seems to prefer slight water movement. Be sure to cover the tank well and not fill it completely, as Bettas need occasional access to a layer of moist air above the surface of the water and are excellent jumpers.

water parameters:

  • Temperature: 21 - 27°C
  • pH: 5.5 - 7.5
  • Hardness: 0 - 179 ppm

Diet: In their natural habitat, Betta sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates. They can also accept dry foods by gradually getting used to them. A varied diet is essential for their overall well-being. Live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms and occasionally small earthworms will improve their colors and physical condition.

Small insects such as crickets or vinegar flies (Drosophila) can also be included in their diet, but it is recommended to feed these insects with fish flakes or vegetable matter before offering them to fish.

CAUTION: Be careful not to overfeed them, as Betta species tend to be obese. Excess consumption of brine shrimp can also lead to health problems in young fish.
