Maintenance tips for a fighting fish - Betta splendens:

  • Suitable aquarium: Provide an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 10 liters, with ideally 30 liters, for an individual Betta.
  • Water Quality: Maintain optimum water quality for the health of your Betta. The ideal water temperature is around 23-26°C. Make sure the pH is between 6.5 and 7.5, with water hardness between 3 and 15 GH. Perform regular water changes (about 10% volume) weekly to maintain clean, stable water.
  • Filter and circulation: Use a low flow(waterfall) filter or foam filter to maintain fresh water circulation. Bettas don't like strong water currents, so be sure to provide proper filtration without creating strong currents that could stress the fish.
  • Setting up the aquarium: After the soil plants have taken root well, add floating aquatic plants to provide shade and resting areas for your Betta. Also use broad-leaved plants, such as Anubias Barteri for example, to provide a resting surface and create hiding places, to create a nurturing environment.
  • Food: Feed your Betta with a suitable diet based on high quality pellets (size M then L depending on the size of the fish). Regularly supplement its diet with mosquito larvae, daphnia or other live or frozen foods to vary its diet. Be careful with bloodworms, as they can cause constipation problems if given too much. They must therefore be given occasionally and in small quantities.
  • Compatibility: Avoid keeping several male bettas in the same aquarium, as they are aggressive towards their conspecifics. If you want to add other fish or invertebrates to the aquarium, keep in mind that this can be risky for the fish and invertebrates, which could be attacked or eaten. Also be careful with spiked snails, such as the genus Clithon, because if attacked, the betta could injure itself.
  • Regular Observations: Carefully monitor your Betta's health. Make sure there are no signs of illness, such as loss of appetite, listlessness, abnormal swimming, altered fins or coloration. Stimulate it regularly by gently placing your fingers on the glass of the aquarium to observe its reactions. Limit the use of a mirror to one minute, as prolonged stress can lead to health problems (cortisol).
