The Ambystoma mexicanum, also known as the axolotl, is a species of aquatic salamander native to Mexico. To maintain an Ambystoma mexicanum in the aquarium, here are some tips:

  1. Tank Size: Ambystoma mexicanum requires an aquarium of at least 20 gallons (about 76 liters) for an individual, and larger if you have multiple axolotls. The aquarium should be equipped with a cover to prevent the axolotl from jumping out of the water.

  2. Water: Water should be clean and free of chlorine. You can use an aquarium water conditioner to remove chlorine and other harmful chemicals from the water. The pH of the water should be between 6.5 and 7.5 and the water temperature should be maintained between 18°C and 22°C.

  3. Filtration: The aquarium should be equipped with a filter to keep the water clean. The axolotl produces a lot of waste and a good filtration system is essential to maintain healthy water.

  4. Substrate: The axolotl does not need a substrate in the aquarium, but if you want to put some, use fine sand or gravel. Avoid coarse substrates which can injure the axolotl.

  5. Food: The axolotl is a carnivore and feeds mainly on insects, worms and small crustaceans. You can feed your axolotl live or frozen foods like bloodworms, mosquito larvae, shrimp, or commercial axolotl foods.

  6. Lighting: The axolotl does not need special lighting, but ambient light can help maintain good growth of aquatic plants and maintain a regular day-night cycle.

  7. Decoration: You can add aquatic plants and decorations to the aquarium to create a more natural environment and provide hiding places for your axolotl.

It is important to regularly monitor nitrate and ammonia levels in the water and to do regular water changes to maintain clean, healthy water for your axolotl.
